In vitro Beef
Current Beef Industry

You and your group will be representing one of the five industries/lifestyle choices below. Your task is to present why your industry/lifestyle choice is the best option to a panel of judges. The following must be included in your presentation:

  • A poster or other visual media of your choice

  • A list of any additional resources used outside those found in this webquest

 

You and your group will be responsible for answering the following questions;

  • What are the current practices associated with your industry/lifestyle choice?

  • What costs associated with your industry/lifestyle choice?

  • What are some possible health concerns & benefits?

  • Are current practices are sustainable and if not, what changes could be made to make them sustainable?

 

Along with convincing the panel that your industry/lifestyle choice is the best you must include at least one arguement against each of the other groups. This rebuttal will be presented by one person from each group elected to act as a judge. 

 

Suggested roles for each group:

  • Researcher: every group member should be responsible for research

  • Committee Member: group member responsible for sitting on committee and presenting rebuttal

  • Defendent: group member responsible for answering the rebuttal

  • Presenters: group members responsible for presenting their industry/lifestyle choices to the panel

  • Organizer: group member responsible for keeping others on task

 

Note: these are suggested roles, however, each group will also be graded on how well they cooperate as a group. 

 

After the presentations have finished each student will fill out a self-evaluation to reflect on how this WebQuest may or may not have changed their perceptions of the food industry.

Crisis Alert!

The population of the Earth is expected to reach 9 billion in 37 years and diets are changing in developing countries. Large areas of forest will be lost due to the need for space for agriculture. Our already strained water sources will be exhausted and the quality of diets will decrease while the price of food rises. The global issue of climate change continues to loom as methane and carbon dioxide emissions will also rise with increased production on rice paddies and cattle farms.

 

The UN has decided that the big producers of the Earth are to put financing and research into one particular industry/lifestyle choice as a solution. They are looking at two main protein producers (beef and fish), two possible alternate protein industries (in vitro beef and insects) as well as the vegetarian lifestyle to determine which one is the best choice for the sustainability of the Earth and its inhabitants.
